Travel toiletries: What I learned after 3 years of traveling carry-on only
All my "wisdom" about travel toiletries summarized in one video. 😂
Ever since I gave up my apartment a few years ago, I've been living out of a carry-on sized backpack and I had the pleasure to test many products.
I've already made several videos about travel sized toiletries, but I wanted to make a video that summed it all up and talk a little more about what toiletries I carry for ultralight or short trips and long term travel.

Some years back I tried merino wool t-shirts for everyday wear. They were great for comfort and stink resistance, but always fell apart too quickly. Developed holes so holding it up in front of a lamp was like having my own little planetarium. Didn't matter hand wash, machine wash, hang up and don't use at all... Also the brand didn't matter. Holes! My guess is some combination of moths, backpack or seat belt friction, and wet wringing. Whatever the cause, even the cheapest cotton or polyester tees outlasted them many times over. I still have several long sleeve merino shirts from Costco. They developed holes too! Some had never even been worn yet, with no obvious bugs in the closet. But they were about $10 each on sale and still work fine for cool weather hiking in Colorado. So I machine washed them all (in case of invisible moth eggs) and started keeping them rolled up in a sealed dry bag. At some point one brand (I think it was Ibex?) made shirts from threads of merino wrapped in a nylon helix in a 7:1 ratio. Got one on clearance from Sierra Trading Post and then never saw any more. Still not sure how sturdy it was, because I gained weight and lost track of it in my wrong-size clothes. But I like the idea of nylon reinforced wool. Wool socks and pullovers/sweaters seem to last longer than tees. Possibly because the wool is usually blended with materials that are stronger and more forgiving. Definitely a correlation between fabric thickness and longevity though.

I think platypus style water bags are way more practical than bottles. When they are empty they almost literally use 0 space, but you can fill them with 1-2-3 liters of water (depending on the size), and always just take up as much space as their water content.

I mostly agree about the water bottles but I have a collapsible bottle that will go flat when out of water. If I know I will have consistent access to drinkable water, or won't be exerting too much, I may not bring it, but it has come in handy a couple of times. And it does have a basic filter integrated. I found myself 1/2 inflating a neck pillow and then moving it around so the gap was between neck and seatback. A minor improvement. I tried the Turtl and it caused my neck to get a "crick" in it and it will usually take several minutes to loosen it up. I have tried it in several positions. No good in any. I like the inflatable camp pillow approach. I may try that for my next Interntional flight.

I am loving your content. Multifunctional clothing is useful. Have underwear that can pass as exercise wear AND as swimwear. Loose pants or shorts that can be used as pyjamas or clothing. A piece of fabric that can pass as a sarong, emergency towel, shawl or travel blanket- this could also be a bit of colour on a ‘safe’ colour palette. One loose cotton shirt can dress up plain layers, be sun protection or work like a light jacket..Compression cubes great idea for less used items, eg swimwear or jacket. Dirt company in Australia also sells a travel size fabric spray designed to break down of odors and minimize washing. Tani also makes thin, incredibly comfortable layers which are great for those who tend to overheat. Perfect comfort for air travel. The washing tips in your other video were perfect!

I always tell people that want to join me traveling that they can bring as much as they want, but they have to carry and haul it around themselves. And after hauling a heavy rolling suitcase over cobblestones in Italy or on a remote beach, the next time, suddenly they all manage to do it with a carry-on sized backpack. 😂

There are so many different opinions about filtering (hotel) tap water. But I am like you, I am extremely sensitive towards chlorine etc. I was able to buy a reduced Ultra Grayl because I am often traveling from Germany to the US and I really have a problem with the American tap water. Plus I dislike to use the versions with a straw, after a while it starts to smell... So I think the Grayl will do a good job!

I usually don‘t gift flight attendants or stuff, I never really knew that that was a thing. At least it‘s not in Europe. As for gifts, if I have the space, I will bring something small from Austria, like a local candy or something. But usually I try to gift „time together“, e.g. invite others for a nice meal or cook something Austrian for them. That was always a success. :)

I am older than you and don’t have the back strength to carry a heavy backpack. We’re headed to Norway in a few weeks and I’m taking a lightweight roller bag that meets European standards for size and weight limit of 8 kg. And then a very small backpack as a personal item. My tech needs are simple (phone and small iPad with ebooks loaded on), and I’m taking layerable clothes in merino wool, alpaca and silk including one dark gray dress and one pair of black wool pants, so they go with everything. I take minimal toiletries (with as few liquids as possible). My one “comfort” item is a tiny white noisemaker that charges with the same usb-c cable my phone and iPad use. I’ve done carry-on only for tropical vacations, but not to somewhere cold. I’m excited about the challenge of not over-packing!

Thank you for all of your videos; they are always inspiring! I too am very curious about your review of the bag. Several of your videos have completely changed the way I pack, my favourite of which is the one which charts your journey from 70 to 30 litres and where you explore exactly what type of bag works for you. This made me completely rethink the size and shape of bag I want to carry versus what I actually take with me. 18 months ago I hostel / hotel hopped around the Alps and went crazy with how difficult my Osprey Fairview 40 was to pack / unpack for 1 night stays. Even the fact that I had to unpack it to reach anything beneath the heavy top flap got very frustrating! So I changed tactic remembering what you said about access to a bag when on the floor or in a small space...and now I've just finished what felt like a marathon six months of researching for, then trying out several different bags to solve the 'problem' I had. Think I've got there in the end! Also, it may be helpful or it may be too much information but do you know about OneBagTravels and his bag chart? It's amazingly detailed; he links to it in the comments at the top of the page for this video ua-cam.com/video/izvvVanske8/v-deo.html&lc=UgxSTugEEHKqO-DbzRd4AaABAg.9k4LQhaalQd9zqeO80LIuo

I never travel without a spare pair of eyeglasses (I keep my previous prescription glasses just in case). I can't see very well without them, and replacing them would be a pain in a foreign country. The alternative would be to accustom myself to contact lenses leading up to the trip and packing some along, but that seems like a lot of hassle for not very much space savings.

    • @MaggiFuchs
      @MaggiFuchs 12 днів тому

I agree, it can be quite a challenge to replace those things while traveling. I actually had to replace my glasses while traveling to Brazil, and it went quite smooth - apart from having to wait a few days until the glasses were ready. But luckily, my eyes are not that bad - it would be mildly annoying, but I can go for a few days without glasses and worst case I also have my optical sunglasses, and I don‘t mind wearing them in the dark… 😂

Great to hear that the hero clip is not worth the money! I have one in my Amazon cart but I will delete it now 😊.

Many airlines only accept 1 bag of 7 to 8 kg packed with no separate personal item... makes it even more challenging.....❤

Must go for just 30l backpack now.. mine looks much smaller than yours.. cabinmax ...1.20 lb only. Nothing more so this time wont be cgecked in or lost by bus company! I ll have to take many inhalers longterm as just too costly to buy...plus a camera...love the 33 item rule...need a thick jumper though...

I’m afraid I’m not a big help… I dyed my hair dark for decades, but when I started traveling and inevitably had way to many hairdresser appointments gone wrong, I just decided to bite the bullet and returned to my natural hair color and just live with the gray hair… But it‘s hard! I miss my darker hair, but I know it‘s just not worth the hassle… 😂
